TLDR: Redmayne nails it
In The Day of the Jackal (1973), the Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, albeit an older model. Graham Norton reference and more: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). Lynch is poorly cast.
Overall, the story is a viable adaptation
Unfortunately, the leads aren’t up to par, which detracts from the otherwise spectacular and high-quality production. Lynch is not being overlooked, it’s just the high bar set by Redmayne. A more experienced actor might have provided a more believable antagonist/opponent figure needed to challenge the Jackal.
There’s a constant barometer of deception in the background
The character development works, although some things are left open in the main characters’ stories, but that could be desired. The locations, the varied interactions, and Redmayne’s use of languages and character changes really add a layer of their own to the story. I’m looking forward to seeing how Se01 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Se02.
If he does, Se02 could be quite promising
Hopefully Lynch will tone down his acting, be less forced, and give a more nuanced performance to try to match Redmayne.
